Power Outage

No doubt many of you were tuned into the weather all week as we anticipated the largest storm we have had this winter. I love snow. Growing up in a desert in California offered me very little life experience with snow so moving to Ohio seemed to increase my chances of experiencing the elusive weather pattern of my childhood. However, there is one aspect of this oncoming storm that I was not looking forward to the potential loss of power.

I can think of others ways to spend an evening than sitting in a cold, dark house with nothing but board games that you can hardly see keeping you entertained. While through weather and accidents there is the potential for us to lose power in our homes, in our spiritual lives are you not thankful that we never have to fear our God losing His power? Consider the many aspects of our lives that God’s power is seen.

Think of salvation. One of the most blessed moments of our lives is when we come to know Christ as our Lord and Savior. We see God’s power beautifully displayed in the resurrection of Christ and in His provision for us (2 Cor. 13:4). It is through God’s power that our salvation is even made possible.

Think of our sanctification. God has promised through His power to provide everything that we need to grow to be more like Him. 2 Peter 1:3 reminds us that “His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:” You and I have everything in His Word that we need to successfully live the Christian life, all of that is made possible through His power.

Lastly, think of God’s provision in our lives. Every single day, you and I face things that need God’s power at work in our lives. Whether it is to overcome temptations that are seeking to draw us into sin (2 Cor. 10:4), to meet our physical needs, or to meet our greatest spiritual needs, we know that in Christ we have all that we could ever need (Psa. 23:1).

While our earthly power sources may be fickle, we have no such worries about our God. I would encourage you to take some time and reflect on the power of our God and all the many ways we see that in our lives daily. Like the Psalmist, when we consider the power of God we are left stating, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
